Early challenges cultivate life-long passion for HCM Founder, Tim WalkerHalcyon Founder and CEO, Timothy Walker, Sr., grew up in an underprivileged neighborhood that experienced the worst of outcomes from helping systems. One outlet from the neighborhood that Tim carried with him was his love of team sports. Playing football, Tim had to overcome many educational obstacles due to a failing public school system. This need and desire for better systems in low socioeconomic areas would eventually turn into Tim's primary life-long passion and focus.
His journey began when he was told by colleges and university football recruiters that he was academically ineligible to play football his freshman year. Proposition 48 is a ruling that stated that students must have completed 11 or more core credits in order to participate in football their freshman year. Tim was affected because he had not taken enough mathematics. He had not been provided any type of guidance from school counselors to ensure that he was ready for the next level. Tim had to sit out of football his freshman year and take the proper math courses to become eligible to play football. Tim worked hard and became eligible the following season. After graduating from college, Tim began a career in law enforcement, where he became a part of the police culture. During his tenor as an officer, Tim witnessed and experienced blatant racism throughout the department. The police culture was inequitable and gave privileged to certain individuals. He also realized that not all people were racist, but that racism was hidden within policies and procedures. Over the next several years, Tim began to identify the many ways of which institutional and structural racism existed not only within the police department, but within all helping systems. He developed the courage to bring many unpopular and extremely uncomfortable issues to the forefront to induce change. Tim's unique ability to communicate with all organizational levels within public service systems helps bridge the equity gap and build positive relationships between underprivileged communities and helping systems. He brings these values and desire for 'better' to each client and project at HCM. |
" One of my basic core values is the belief in working together, with all people, for all people. Together, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to. It is this belief that is the driving force behind Halcyon Consulting and Mediation." - Tim Walker |
"Mr. Walker brings knowledge and abilities that can not only enhance a program, but it can also turn the program around if it is not doing well. He is constantly better preparing himself to face challenges and assisting others in overcoming theirs. |
